Class II Dust & Hazardous-Location Equipment for Food & Beverage

Class II dust and washdown-rated equipment for milling, grain, sugar, brewing and food processing.

Ex Solutions supplies CSA-certified dust-ignition-proof and explosion-proof equipment for food, beverage and grain processing — flour mills, sugar refineries, breweries and confectionery plants — where combustible dust (Class II) and washdown environments drive the requirement.

The challenge

Grain, flour, sugar, starch and many food powders are combustible — making milling, handling and storage areas Class II hazardous locations (Group G). Equipment must be dust-ignition-proof, keep its surface temperature below the dust's ignition point, and often survive high-pressure washdown and sanitation chemicals.

What we supply

  • Class II dust-ignition-proof enclosures, junction boxes and control stations
  • Explosion-proof and washdown-rated LED lighting for process and storage areas
  • Hazardous-location disconnects and operators for milling and conveying equipment
  • Certified cable glands, seals and fittings rated for combustible-dust Groups
  • Sealed, corrosion- and washdown-resistant options for sanitation environments

Work we’ve delivered in this sector

Anonymized for confidentiality — real scope, real scale.

It surprises people, but a flour mill or sugar refinery is a genuine hazardous location. Grain, flour, sugar, starch and many food powders are combustible dust, so milling, conveying and storage areas are Class II (usually Group G). The equipment has to be dust-ignition-proof and run cool enough to stay below the dust's ignition temperature — while surviving washdown.

Rated for dust and sanitation

We supply Class II dust-ignition-proof enclosures and control stations, explosion-proof and washdown-rated LED lighting, disconnects and operators for milling and conveying gear, and the certified glands and seals that keep a dusty classified area compliant. Sealed, corrosion-resistant options handle high-pressure sanitation without losing the rating.

Scoped to the plant

From a single control station to a 50-enclosure line expansion, we match the equipment to the plant's Group and Division and manage factory lead times so the install stays on schedule.

Class, Division and Group must be confirmed with your AHJ and a qualified person (QPS) against the Canadian Electrical Code.

Common questions

Is a food or grain plant really a hazardous location?
Where combustible dust is present — flour, sugar, starch, grain — yes. Those areas are Class II, typically Group G, and are classified Division 1 or Division 2 per CEC Section 18. Handling, milling and storage areas usually need dust-ignition-proof equipment.
Do you have washdown-rated hazardous equipment?
Yes. For sanitation environments we supply sealed, corrosion-resistant explosion-proof and dust-ignition-proof equipment that stands up to high-pressure washdown while keeping its hazardous-location rating.
