The challenge

Wastewater plants generate methane and hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) in digesters, headworks and wet wells, making those areas Class I hazardous locations. Equipment must be explosion-proof, corrosion-resistant against a chemically aggressive atmosphere, and often integrated into custom control panels for blowers, compressors and pumps.

Wastewater treatment is quietly one of the most demanding hazardous-location markets. Anaerobic digesters make methane; sewage makes hydrogen sulphide (H₂S). Both are flammable, so digesters, headworks, blower buildings and wet wells are Class I areas — and the atmosphere is corrosive on top of being explosive.

Equipment that survives the atmosphere

We supply Class I Division 1 and Division 2 explosion-proof enclosures, corrosion-resistant LED lighting for headworks and galleries, disconnects and control stations, and the certified glands and seals that keep each classified-zone boundary compliant.

Panels built to the drawing

A lot of wastewater work is control-panel work: digester-gas compressors, blowers and pumps need hazardous-location local control panels. We supply modified explosion-proof enclosures configured as LCPs — operators, disconnects and breakers mounted to your drawing — so the panel lands ready to install.

Zone classification and equipment selection must be confirmed with your AHJ and a qualified person (QPS) against the Canadian Electrical Code.

Common questions

Why is a wastewater plant a hazardous location?
Anaerobic digestion produces methane, and sewage produces hydrogen sulphide — both flammable and both making digesters, headworks and wet wells Class I areas. A qualified person classifies each zone as Division 1 or Division 2 per CEC Section 18, and equipment is selected to match.
Can you build the control panels, not just supply the boxes?
Yes. We supply modified hazardous-location enclosures configured as local control panels — drilled, mounted, with operators, disconnects and breakers per your drawing — so the panel arrives ready for the classified area.
